Spend Smarter with Elements

Interested in smarter money management? Begin with the basics of spending and monitoring your money. You’ll also want to secure the right banking relationship to help you do these things.

Pete recently commented on the challenges of spending: "Most of our poor financial habits come via commerce. We spend money when we shouldn't, and this is generally caused by our habits. So it's pretty simple: if you change your habits — then you spend less money on things that you don't really need. Yes, this is very obvious; however it's not exactly an easy transition."Pete the Planner is your credit union’s esteemed financial education partner and the 4th most influential personal finance expert in the nation.

Pete's Tips for Controlling Monthly Spending

  • Master the grocery store by shopping with a list, buying generic whenever possible, and shopping for what’s on sale
  • Review how much you spend each week dining out
  • Lower your utility bills by adopting energy-savings habits
  • Don’t overcommit to more than 15 fixed monthly payments
  • Eliminate overdraft fees
