Managing a Tight Budget as a College Student

For many students, starting college is the beginning of a new adventure. Once the euphoria fades, though, they realize that this exciting new venture comes with a host of new responsibilities as well. Since education can be expensive and all-consuming, financial responsibility is usually one of the most difficult areas to manage for college students. A study conducted by the University of Arizona (in partnership with the National Endowment for Financial Education) revealed that students were not interested to learn about money or credit management. Unsurprisingly, the average American college senior owes around $4,000 in credit card debt.

A Closer Look at Tax-Loss Harvesting

Each year, some of your investments will reflect a positive gain while some others could be showing a negative return. Not always is it clear whether or not your investment has made you money or not, but we’ll save that explanation for another day. For now, let’s focus on ways to keep more money in your pocket versus giving it to the IRS. Something you should consider each year is “Tax-Loss Harvesting” within your taxable account.

The Need For Estate Planning After Divorce

The statistics don’t lie and they don’t change. Approximately fifty percent (50%) of first marriages end in divorce, seventy-eight percent (78%) of second marriages end in divorce and ninety-three percent (93%) of third marriages end in divorce. Of course, on the other side of the coin, one hundred percent (100%) of marriages that don’t end in divorce, end in death. But I digress. The lead in is meant to make the point that, among the many things a newly divorced person needs to do, is review his or her estate plan. Divorce may, but usually does not, automatically remove the ex-spouse from a beneficiary position or a fiduciary position. Most family law practitioners recommend a stop at the estate planning lawyer’s office the day after the ink is dry on the Decree of Dissolution, but I recommend a month before that date. Below is a list of some common estate planning instruments and what effect, if any, the divorce decree has on each one.

Prince, Pauper, or In-Between: How Long Can You Live on Your Savings?

Unfortunately, many Americans do not have extra funds to handle a financial hardship if one were to arise. In a recent survey conducted by Bankrate.com, almost half of Americans confessed they don’t have any emergency savings set aside to cover three months of expenses. Within that number, more than a quarter (28%) have no emergency savings at all. At the other extreme, almost half of the people polled have over three months in emergency savings. The foundation of this great savings breakdown may be simple: Many people just don’t know how to save. Why are so many Americans behind on savings? One of the big reasons people aren’t saving more is likely because they are living beyond their means. In addition, the increased use of credit cards and the popularity of payment options such as Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, have made it easier to spend than to save. Here are six tips to pursue a stress-free financial future.

Wouldn’t You Like to Sleep Better Than a Baby?

I recently met my brand-new niece who lives several states away. At the time she was seven weeks old (and now almost 10) and her parents were, not surprisingly, sleep-deprived. At one point my sister and I discussed the sheer irony of the phrase “sleep like a baby” because new babies do not generally sleep soundly or consistently.
